CASA In-Service Training: Combating Cyber-bullying

March 7, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

About one in four middle and high school students have been victims of cyber-bullying, which uses cell phones, computers or other technology – particularly social media – to harass, threaten or intimidate.

Just like face-to-face bullying, such aggression can trigger depression and anxiety, which can lead to a number of health problems and risk factors, including an increased risk of suicide.

We need to know more about cyberbullying, such as the fact that cyberbullies tend to have anxiety and depression problems of their own.

To examine cyber-bullying and discuss what can be done about it, we are hosting an in-service training session for our CASA volunteers.

The class will be held March 7 – from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. – in the Small Meeting Room at Prince George’s County’s Greenbelt Library.

One of our CASAs, Dr. Loyce Pailen, will facilitate the discussion. She will explain how to recognize the warning signs of cyber-bullying, how to talk to young people about such teasing, taunting and threatening, and how to combat it.

Dr. Pailen teaches technology and cybersecurity policy at the University of Maryland University College. She has also written books on the subject for children and parents.

If you would like to register for the training, please contact Tom Ferraro at CASA/Prince George’s County: (301) 209-0491 or tferraro@pgcasa.org
